Hank Ballard, one of the greatest R&B performers in American music, was born 81 years ago on Nov. 18, 1927. He performed “Work With Me Annie” with the Midnighters, and he wrote (and performed) “The Twist,” that Chubby Checker made his own. He recorded for Cincinnati’s King Records, under the producer Ralph Bass. The lyrics of Annie were risque, and the song was banned from the airwaves, though it was a big hit.
